Concept: Rebuilding Checkout for the 70% Who Shop on Phones

Starting Point

A small boutique apparel retailer running an unmodified stock Shopify theme, unchanged since the store launched — despite the majority of their traffic now arriving on phones rather than desktops.

The Problem

Mobile devices account for roughly 70% of all website visits in 2026, but the store's checkout experience was built and tested primarily on desktop. That mismatch shows up directly in the numbers: desktop converts at an average of 3.7% versus 2% on mobile — a gap of nearly half. The average Shopify store overall converts at just 1.4%, while stores in the top 20% convert at 3.2% or higher, and the top 10% reach 4.7% or better. A "good" checkout completion rate in 2026 sits at 45–55%, with top-performing stores reaching 60–75% — but mobile checkout typically runs 10–15 points behind desktop within the very same store.

Our Approach

Product and checkout pages were rebuilt mobile-first rather than adapted downward from a desktop layout — designing for the 70% of visitors on phones as the primary case, not the exception.

What Changed

  • Express payment options (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay) surfaced above the fold at checkout, cutting the number of fields a mobile shopper has to fill in by hand.
  • Visible trust signals — return policy, security badges — placed near the buy button rather than buried in the footer.
  • Mobile-first image and page-speed optimization, since a slow mobile page compounds an already-lower mobile conversion rate.
  • A shortened path from "Add to Cart" to "Order Confirmed," removing steps that exist mainly because the default theme included them.

The Outcome

This is an unsolicited concept, not completed client work — no results have been measured for this business. Conversion rates also vary meaningfully by what's being sold, price point, and how often people buy it, so these figures are a benchmark for the scale of opportunity, not a guarantee. Independent 2026 data puts the average Shopify store at a 1.4% conversion rate, with the top 20% of stores converting at 3.2% or higher. Closing even part of that gap — particularly on mobile, which now represents most of a small retailer's traffic — is typically where the clearest, lowest-cost opportunity sits, well before increasing ad spend to bring in more traffic to the same leaky checkout.

Industry Context

The mobile-desktop conversion gap isn't unique to any one store; it shows up across the small-retailer segment as a structural pattern, since most stock themes and legacy site builds were designed and QA'd on desktop first.
