Google Business Profile Now Outweighs Your Website in Local Search
Google Business Profile signals account for roughly a third of local map-pack ranking weight in 2026 — more than on-page website signals, reviews, and backlinks combined in most models.

The 2026 weighting
According to current local-ranking research, Local Pack visibility breaks down roughly as: Google Business Profile signals 32%, on-page website signals 19%, review signals 16%, link signals 15%, behavioral signals 8%, citation signals 7%, and personalization 3%. Eight of the top ten individual ranking factors in the Local Pack and Maps category come directly from the Google Business Profile itself, not the website.
What matters most inside the profile
- The primary GBP category selected is identified as the single most important relevance signal in the 2026 Whitespark Local Search Ranking Factors survey.
- Being open at the moment someone searches is now the fifth most important factor for Local Pack visibility.
- Businesses with 100 or more reviews rank an average of 3.2 times higher than those with fewer.
- A steady pace of 2–3 new reviews per week outperforms infrequent bursts of many reviews at once.
Why this still doesn't mean skip the website
46% of all Google searches carry local intent, and 76% of people who perform a local search visit a business within 24 hours — but the Business Profile is usually what gets them to that decision point, and the website is what confirms it once they click through. Treating a Business Profile as a minor, "set it and forget it" listing rather than an actively maintained asset is one of the more common — and most fixable — gaps in a local business's online presence.
